People who have sleeping disorders may not realize that they already have one. Usually, they would just feel sleepy all throughout the day. These people would often appear exhausted and fatigued even if the day is just about to start. People with sleeping disorders would either find it difficult to sleep at night or have problems in remaining asleep at night. Forgetfulness is common among these people. They also are unable to focus their attention and have difficulties in concentrating. Easy irritability, sudden mood changes or mood swings and being over emotional are commonly observed in these people. All of these manifestations happen because the person lacks refreshing sleep due to a sleeping disorder.

You will know that a person has a sleeping disorder when you notice the symptoms mentioned above and if the person confirms that difficulty of falling asleep is present. Aside from that, persons with sleeping disorders would also tell you that they are having a hard time in getting out of their beds in the morning because they feel that they still need to sleep. In some cases, people with sleeping disorders would also reason out that they are experiencing nightmares that wakes them up in the middle of their sleep and they could not go back to sleep. Sometimes, they would even blame their sleeplessness to their spouse who are having sleeping problems. If these are all present in a person with sleeping problems, then a sleep disorder is definitely present and should be treated promptly.

Sleeping problems may happen prior to sleeping, like difficulty in falling asleep; during sleeping, such as not able to go back to sleep; and at the morning, such as having a hard time to get up from bed.

The most common problem seen in people with sleeping disorders is to have a hard time of falling asleep. Having a hard time of falling asleep is called as sleep latency. Sleep latency can be present in sleeping disorders such as restless leg syndrome, delayed sleeping disorder, insomnia of the paradoxical type, sleep onset insomnia, and even shift work. On the other hand, sleep fragmentation is described as the difficulty of keeping asleep. In contrast to sleep latency, patients with sleep fragmentation can sleep immediately without having difficulties. Sleep fragmentation is present among individuals with sleep maintenance insomnia or shift work. Sleep maintenance insomnia and advanced sleep phase disorder may have manifestations of waking up in the middle of sleep and problems of getting back to sleep.

Feeling sleepy all throughout the day indicates sleeping disorders such as narcolepsy, central or obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, advanced sleep phase disorder, shift work, and restless leg syndrome. Staying alert and active during the day is also present in people with these sleeping disorders.

On the other hand, people who have difficulties in waking up in the morning or getting out of the bed may also suffer a sleeping disorder. This disorder is called as excessive sleep inertia wherein there are also some cases that people have difficulties of being alert after sleeping. However, this sleeping disorder is often an offshoot of other sleeping disorders like sleep apnea and sleep phase disorder.

For people who are doing activities during sleeping may have disorders such as confusion arousal, nightmares, sleep terrors, sleep related eating disorder, sleepwalking, and bruxism. These conditions are generally classified as parasomnia.

When people would blame their spouse because of their lack of sleep, then it is most likely that these spouses have sleep apnea or snoring loudly, bruxisms, restless leg syndrome, and periodic limb movement disorders.
