How To Detect And Identify Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Many of us are unfortunately aware of the things that can clutter up an otherwise happy and healthy life. Disease, disaster, accidents all have a way of showing up when least expected. Most of these announce themselves relatively clearly, giving us at least an idea of what to do about them.

Some things don’t announce themselves so clearly. They sneak in and do their damage in stealth, giving no indication of their presence. Sleep apnea is one of these conditions.

Countless adults in America today have sleep apnea, and are completely unaware of it. Obviously, since this happens while you are sleeping, you can’t have any way of knowing about it. The basic definition of sleep apnea is an interruption of breathing while sleeping on a regular basis. Sometimes this wakes you up, sometimes it doesn’t.

Even if you don’t wake up, or remember waking up from sleep apnea, it still interferes with a good nights sleep. There are several different levels of sleep, and a natural cycle which the body needs to go through as it proceeds through each level. Sleep apnea makes it nearly impossible to cycle through the natural progression of sleep, robbing your of its benefits.

One way to check if you have sleep apnea is to see how sleepy you get when you get bored during the day. If you think you’ve gotten seven or eight hours of sleep the night before, yet become extremely drowsy very easily during the day, you may have sleep apnea.

Another way to check for sleep apnea symptoms is to keep a sleep journal, or sleep diary. Jot down your feelings, how you think you slept, if it was deep or restful, or light and fitful. Also it can help to record these things if you wake up during the night.

The easiest way to check for apnea symptoms is to record yourself while you sleep, or ask a spouse or partner to listen for the telltale signs. These are any sign that you’ve stopped breathing momentarily. If you can bring the recording, or your helpful spouses description of your sleeping to your physician, he or she will be in a much better position to give you some helpful advice on what to do.

If your doctor thinks you need it, he or she might recommend a sleep study. This is where you will actually sleep in a laboratory, with several instruments recording various things while you sleep. This can be of fantastic help to get to the heart of the issue.
