How can I stop snoring?

Snoring is a serious problem for the snorer himself as well as for his loved one’s who suffer from sleep deprivation caused by the snoring sound. Snoring is known for its potential in causing serious relationship damage that can even result in divorce. Besides being a social threat, snoring can also be a sign for an underlying medical condition being present such as sleep apnea.  Sleep specialists are also relating snoring to physical conditions such as obesity, structural defects, alcohol consumption and drug abuse.

Becoming aware of your own snoring is very difficult due to the fact snoring is generated while you sleep. Usually, snoring is detected by a snorer’s sleeping partner or roommate. Once you become aware of your snoring it is very important you address this problem with all seriousness and find an effective treatment.

In case you sleep on your back, the first thing you can do is try to sleep on your side or stomach for a few days and see if there is any change. When we sleep on our back, in some cases, the tongue falls to the back of the throat causing an obstruction that leads to snoring. Another treatment that has a positive effect on snorers is the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine which delivers a constant pressurized air through a mask keeping the airways open.

Over-the-counter products might also have a positive effect. Many snorers have found relief in using nasal strips, nasal sprays, snoring pills and mouthpieces. Each of these snoring products works in a different way and has a different effect on each person. Because snoring is caused by various reason, what works for one person does not necessarily work on the other.

Behavioral changes are another option. Snoring is known to be related to various physical conditions which can be controlled. Here are some examples:

Obesity – being overweight can lead to the accumulation of excess tissues in your throat which can cause an obstruction leading to snoring. If that is the case, you should go on a diet.
Alcohol – alcohol consumption leads to the over-relaxation of throat tissues.
Deviated septum – a deviated septum leads to snoring because of the nasal obstruction and constant breathing through the mouth, this can be fixed by surgery.

No matter what is the cause of your snoring, you should consult a doctor prior to any decision on which treatment you think is best for you. Remember, snoring could indicate you have a medical problem – seek professional advice and treat it.
