Clarifying Your Core Values – A Hidden Treasure Emerges

“The new one is the most beautiful of all; he is so young and pretty.” And the old swans bowed their heads before him.

Then he felt quite ashamed, and hid his head under his wing; for he did not know what to do, he was so happy, and yet not at all proud. He had been persecuted and despised for his ugliness, and now he heard them say he was the most beautiful of all the birds…. Then he rustled his feathers, curved his slender neck, and cried joyfully, from the depths of his heart, “I never dreamed of such happiness as this, while I was an ugly duckling.”

We’ve all heard the tail before, the one of the ugly duckling.  Perhaps many of us have even felt the same way in our own lives.  Trodden down by limiting beliefs, many that stem from childhood.  Beliefs that our mind has adopted as truths without reason.

I met a lady once that thought she could not do anything artsy because her kindergarten teacher told her that she colored messy.  Our beliefs about ourselves are often rooted in situations that occurred in our youth before our brain could really comprehend the meaning of what was actually being said to us.  Even though this seems silly to us as adults we still feel, think, and act based on those beliefs.

So obviously we have some work to do to overcome how we currently perceive ourselves.   How can we erase the ugly duckling syndrome and start living from your core values?  The values that really make up who you are.  The ones that are not skewed by the ideals of the society we live in.  The truth that really makes up you… the stuff you know about yourself way deep down inside that you never let anyone know about you.

First, if you had nothing holding you back, no consequences, no limits placed on you by society, the economy, by people surrounding you, by your own limiting beliefs… what would you do?  If you can really stop and think about that question and answer it from a sincere and honest place, then you are on the right path to understanding who you are at your core.
